Turkish crew spurns rescue

The crew of a Turkish freighter abandoned their ship after it began to sink near the island of Samos on Tuesday and spurned a rescue attempt by Greek coast guard helicopters.

Instead, the 12 seamen chose to board the Turkish seismic research vessel Piri Reis.

It is not clear what caused the freighter, the Dogu Haslaman, to take on water.

It was carrying fertilizer from Ukraine to Israel.
