Illegal gambling arcade shut down

In an ongoing coordinated operation between the Economic Police and the Financial Crimes Squad to crack down on illegal gambling, authorities on Thursday shut down an operation running out of a cafe in the Athenian neighborhood of Pangrati.

A raid by police on the cafe that was used as a front for an illegal gambling arcade led to the arrest of the establishment’s manager, a Georgian national, as well as seven Albanian men posing as patrons.

The cafe allegedly organized illegal card games, while police also confiscated 10 slot machines, two suitcases containing plastic betting chips and 376 euros in cash.

The eight suspects will be questioned by an Athens prosecutor.
