Protesters, police clash outside Parliament
Riot police used tear gas against a group of demonstrators protesting a fresh batch of cutbacks outside Parliament on Tuesday afternoon.
According to police, some 10,000 people took part in a march organized by the country?s two major unions, GSEE and ADEDY, against new austerity measures demanded by the country’s partners and creditors in exchange for further funding by the European Union, the European Central Bank and the International Monetary Fund.
A separate protest demonstration by PAME communist unionists also took place on the same day without any incidents being reported.
The rallies were held in view of Tuesday?s general strike, which saw the disruption of public transport services and also halted train and ferry services around the country. Many schools and banks around Greece were also closed.
