Evros shootout injures two smugglers

Suspected people smugglers near the Turkish border opened fire on border guards on Friday, prompting police to fire back and leading to the injury of two of the smuggling suspects, a Turkish national and a Pakistani, while another person accomplice fled back across the border to Turkey.

Border guards, who nabbed the smugglers near the village of Tychero in Evros in cooperation with officers of the European Union?s border monitoring agency Frontex, also detained 25 undocumented migrants ? 19 Bangladeshis and six Pakistanis.

The injured smugglers were in a local hospital receiving treatment for their injuries which were not serious, according to doctors.
