Police detain 44 suspects in antiquities theft investigation

Police in Halkidki, northern Greece, on Sunday detained 44 people in different parts of northern and central Greece in connection with a large haul of illegally-acquired antiquities.

Among the items confiscated are thousands of ancient coins, several guns and metal detectors.

The 44 suspects detained include the 66-year-old alleged leader of the ring, which is believed to have been operating across 13 prefectures.
