Eight members of jewelry heist ring netted

Police in Athens said on Wednesday that they had arrested eight suspected members of a ring believed to be behind dozens of armed robberies in various districts, chiefly on jewelry stores.

It remained unclear whether Wednesday?s mugging of two employees of a jewelry firm on the national highway linking Athens to Thessaloniki was believed to be the work of the ring.

Two gunmen cornered the employees? car on the highway and forced them to get out before fleeing in the vehicle.

Police later found the truck abandoned close to the scene of the robbery but there was no sign of the valuables or the robbers.
