Government braces for protests at March 25 parade

Prime Minister Lucas Papademos is due to hold a meeting of key ministers on Monday to discuss the organization of Independence Day parades on March 25 amid fears of protests.

A number of public events recently, most notably the October 28 parades, have been marked by demonstrations against politicians and public figures. Last October, the military parade in Thessaloniki was halted due to protests.

Government sources expressed concern that some unionists are planning to use the March 25 parade as an opportunity to voice their displeasure with the government?s economic policy and display their anger with the political system.
