Venizelos to stick to commitments if part of new government

Greek Finance Minister Evangelos Venizelos says he will ensure the country?s commitments to international creditors are honored if he is part of the new government after general elections, expected in late April or early May.

Venizelos is the only contender for the leadership of the majority socialist PASOK party in a vote this Sunday. Once he takes over the party helm, he will resign as minister to focus on the election campaign.

PASOK has seen its popularity plunge amid party defections and public anger over austerity measures taken in return for the bailouts. Opinion polls have indicated it is unlikely that any party will win an outright majority in the upcoming election.
