Siemens deal paves way for metro extensions

Attiko Metro, the company responsible for constructing the Athens metro, signed a contract with Siemens on Thursday to provide signaling equipment for seven new stations, whose completion had been held up by legal wrangles over allegations of bribery.

The stations — three on Line 3 of the metro system (Peristeri, Anthoupoli and Haidari) and four on Line 2 (Ilioupoli, Alimos, Argyroupoli and Elliniko) — are due to be completed next year.

The Greek branch of the German electronic and engineering giant had been accused of paying bribes to secure public contracts but last week reached an out-of-court settlement with the government.
