Benefit fraud cost Greece 111 mln euros in 2011

Welfare benefit fraud cost the state some 111 million euros last year, according to a census which showed that one in six beneficiaries had not presented themselves to authorities.

A total of 36,294 people have been struck from the list of beneficiaries, according to authorities who said the fraudsters swindled the state either through multiple registrations, by not declaring the death of a relative who had been a beneficiary, or by claiming disability benefits while having no health problems.
