Vote to be held April 29 or May 6, gov’t spokesman says
Elections will be held on April 29 or May 6, government spokesman Pantelis Kapsis said on Monday.
Speaking to Antenna TV on Monday, Kapsis rejected criticism ? also fueled by concerns of protests during the weekend’s national day parades — that Greece’s coalition government does not represent popular will.
?These are just pretexts in my opinion. Citizens will express [their political will] at the coming elections which will take place on April 29 or May 6,? Kapsis said.
The government spokesman said tight security measures were necessary to conduct the Saturday and Sunday parades — held annually to commemorate Greece’s uprising in 1821 — without disruptions.
Previous celebrations have been marred by minor clashes and heckling against political officials, prompted by the government’s austerity measures.
Streets of the capital were this time cordoned off and about 4,000 police officers were deployed to make sure the event is concluded peacefully.
