Strymonas River floods farms in Serres
Hundreds of hectares of arable land was flooded by overspill from Strymonas River in the northern Greek prefecture of Serres on Tuesday, destroying more that 3,500 tracts of wheat, cotton and corn, according to reports.
The Strymonas River broke through its fortified banks as authorities tried to relieve some of the pressure of the upstream Kerkini Lake, which has reached dangerous levels in the past two weeks due to excessive rainfall in the region, as well as in neighboring Bulgaria.
Fortifications put in place by authorities last week were unable to withstand the pressure of the rushing waters, according to reports, resulting in floods in the municipality of Amfipoli.
The magnitude of the damage incurred by farmers have yet to be assessed.
Meanwhile, authorities said that the water level of Kerkini Lake has been reduced to manageable levels, though more rainfall is forecast this week in the region.
