Wood stoves add to Thessaloniki smog

The head of Thessaloniki Municipality?s Environmental Department, Maximos Petrakakis, said on Friday that despite the drop in the number of cars circulating in the streets of the northern port city, the amount of airborne particles in the atmosphere increased by 17 percent in 2011 compared to the previous year.

The chemical engineer attributed the rise to the increased use of wood-burning stoves.
