Sixty-year-old ax attacker under armed guard in hospital

A 60-year-old man who struck a police supervisor in the head with an ax in the northeastern town of Ferres, near Alexandroupoli, was in hospital under armed guard on Friday after officers shot him.

The 60-year-old lashed out at the supervisor of the Ferres police precinct, who went to the man?s home to talk him round after he used an ax to threaten municipal workers who had tried to cut off his water supply following months of unpaid bills.

Officers shot the 60-year-old four times in the legs after he attacked the precinct chief.
