Temperature to hit 40C on Tuesday

The temperature is expected to hit 40 degrees Celsius in parts of Greece by the early afternoon on Tuesday on the tail of over a week of temperatures hovering around the mid-30s and rising levels of humidity.

The Hellenic National Meteorological Service said that the eastern mainland, which includes Athens, and the eastern Peloponnese will be most affected by the mini-heat wave as winds will be too light to make any significant difference and humidity reaches the low 60 percentile level.

Meanwhile, the islands of the Aegean and the Ionian will see temperatures of no higher that 35C thanks to northwesterly winds coming in off a wet front in northern Greece at speeds of 5 Beaufort, reaching 6 in parts.

As northerly winds pick up overnight, temperatures are expected to drop on Wednesday.
