Benefits cheat to face magistrate

A 56-year-old man who received some 70,000 euros in disability benefits for being blind while he was actually driving a van and selling fruit and vegetables at open-air markets is to face a magistrate Wednesday.

The man, who was not named, was arrested in Peristeri, western Athens, Tuesday after a complaint was filed by e-mail to the financial police ([email protected]).

Sources said that the man had been issued with a certificate in July 2007 confirming that he had suffered complete loss of eyesight and needed the permanent help of a committee of doctors at the IKA social security fund office in Argos, in the Peloponnese.
