Wily thieves carry out double robbery in central Athens

Unidentified thieves cleaned out a jewelry store on Panepistimiou Street in central Athens on Tuesday morning after digging a hole through the wall of the shop and then another through another wall connecting the establishment with a cell phone retailer, which they also robbed, police said.

The intruders made off with an unspecified amount of valuables and mobile phones, according to the store owners. Police said the double break-in was the first of its kind.

Meanwhile, in the prefecture of Ioannina, northwestern Greece, police detained four people in connection with the mugging of a mailman. The suspects, who reportedly netted 23,000 euros, are believed to have mugged another mailman in March.
