Greek population at 9.9 million
Greece?s official population stands at 9,903,268 according to the results of last year?s census, made public by the Hellenic Statistical Authority (ELSTAT) Tuesday.
The results from the census, carried out last May, indicates that the number of legal residents in Greece has dropped substantially since the last census in 2001, when the population was 10,964,020.
ELSTAT, however, stresses that the two surveys should not be compared as different methodologies were used in each case.
Unsurprisingly, most Greek citizens live in and around Athens. According to ELSTAT, a total of 2,872,928 live in Attica, compared to 878,194 in Thessaloniki.
