Big hash crop farmers sought

Officers of Attica?s narcotics unit are seeking to identify the owners of a large cannabis cultivation close to the former royal estate in Tatoi, north of the capital, where a sophisticated system involving a cellphone SIM card was being used to warn of the presence of intruders.

The farm, which comprised dozens of large cannabis trees, was spotted by a police helicopter last week and put under observation for several days but no suspects appeared. Officers subsequently uprooted and confiscated the trees, some of which had reportedly grown to 4 meters in height.

According to a police investigation, an unusual system comprising cabling lining the perimeter of the farm and a car battery attached to a mobile phone SIM card was used to send messages to the owners whenever anyone approached the crop.

Police had not traced the owner of the cell phone linked to the SIM card by late Tuesday.
