Ex Rethymno mayor found guilty of embezzlement

A court in Hania, Crete, handed a 13-year prison sentence on Friday to former Rethymno Mayor Dimitris Archontakis for embezzling one million euros from the municipality?s coffers. The court also sentenced the municipality?s former head accountant to 19 years in prison in the same case.

While both prison sentences were suspended until the case is tried at the court of appeals, the two men were ordered not to exit the country and post 50,000 euros bails by Monday.
