Man jailed for eight months over race attack

A 30-year-old private security worker was order by a court in Xanthi, northeastern Greece, to serve eight months of a three-year suspended jail sentence and to pay a fine of 200 euros over the assault last week on a anti-racism activist and member of the local Muslim minority.

The victim ?f the attack is a teacher who testified that he was beaten last Tuesday by a group of men wearing t-shirts with the symbol of far-right Chrysi Avgi (Golden Dawn) while putting up posters advertising an anti-racism event in downtown Xanthi. He filed a suit against the 30-year-old after identifying him as being among his attackers.

The 30-year-old had initially claimed that he does not have any links to Golden Dawn, though he later told the Xanthi court that he has «contact» with the group, adding that the party was in no way involved in the attack against the anti-racism activist.

There have been a number of attacks on Muslims in Thrace over recent weeks.
