Five ports left without radar monitoring

Coast guard officials in Piraeus, Patra, Igoumenitsa, Corfu and Lavrio are using radio and Internet to contact ships regarded as suspicious as a radar system monitoring vessels’ movements is no longer operational, Kathimerini has learned.

Intracom, the firm that had operated the radar system, offered its services for a while after its contract expired but is now reportedly suing the state for compensation. Meanwhile coast guard efforts to curb illegal immigration and shipments are being hampered.
