Tsipras calls on factions to embrace one vision

The leader of the left-wing main opposition SYRIZA, Alexis Tsipras, on Friday called on the various factions within his party to take “a decisive step forward” and unite behind a common ideology in order to win the next general elections and revoke the country’s agreements with foreign creditors.

Addressing the party’s annual congress, Tsipras called on cadres to “courageously assume responsibility and heed the call of history.” He said his party would win “a broad and decisive victory” in the next elections and form the country’s first leftist government.

Tsipras lashed out at the three-party coalition, which he said was “pretending to govern while devoutly following the line set down by the creditors,” and accused Prime Minister Antonis Samaras of having “handed over the keys to the troika.”

In May, ahead of the first round of general elections this year, SYRIZA applied to the Supreme Court to be recognized as a party rather than a coalition. This would have allowed it to gain the 50-bonus parliamentary, had it come first. Now Tsipras wants to secure ideological unity for the several disparate factions within SYRIZA.
