Primary school talk a state security risk?

A man claiming to work for Greece’s secret service tried to stop a talk on immigrants’ social integration at a Volos primary school last month, a local education official said yesterday. Local education official Yiannis Tzikas, who was responsible for the event that is part of the government Olympic Education program aimed at boosting pupils’ awareness of Olympic and social issues ahead of the 2004 Games, said the man introduced himself as Othon Medzafos, a National Intelligence Service employee. «He gave us a lecture on the danger posed to the nation by migrants.» Medzafos also approached the mayor of Volos on the matter. The talk was held as scheduled on May 28, with the participation of Albanian community leader Gazi Kaplani, an Athens-based journalist whom the government is trying to expel, having refused to renew his residence permit.
