Former Thessaloniki mayor denies embezzlement

Former Thessaloniki Mayor Vassilis Papageorgopoulos insisted on Wednesday that he did not steal “a single euro” from municipal coffers as he faced charges of collusion in the embezzlement of more than 51 million euros during his two terms in office.

Papageorgopoulos said there were no signs of his personal enrichment. He said he had no money abroad and had only bought a house over the last few years.

Papageorgopoulos also accused financial inspector Anastasia Tsempera of inflating the figure that was missing from the municipality. He said the real amount was 7.2 million euros.
