Protesting farmers hold talks with party officials in Athens
Farmers who have been protesting the government’s austerity measures over the past few weeks began on Monday morning meetings with representatives of political parties in Athens.
The farmers have parked their tractors at the sides of national roads at 33 points in central and northern Greece as well as Crete and the Peloponnese over the last couple of weeks, demanding tax breaks and cheaper fuel and electricity among other things.
The government has said it cannot meet their demands but has offered them some concessions.
The meetings come after farmers and riot police clashed at the main protest in Nikaia, central Greece.
The farmers said they would hold talks with all political parties except for far-right Golden Dawn.
