Farmers’ protest rally to begin at 1 p.m.

Unions representing farmers from around the country will be gathering in central Athens on Tuesday, starting at 1 p.m. at Vathy Square before marching to Parliament.

Farmers are demanding cheaper fuel and tax breaks from the government, among other concessions, with talks breaking down last week between the two sides.

Despite making little progress in talks with government officials, farmers last week agreed to end some 50 highway blockades that had been in effect for nearly a month.

Tuesday’s protest is expected to have a large turnout, causing serious traffic problems in central Athens.
