Macedonia regional official among 7 facing charges for breach of duty

The former head of the Central Macedonia regional authority, Giorgos Tsiotras, along with three former deputy mayors of Thessaloniki and three municipal employees are to face trial for breach of duty.

The seven suspects have been charged in connection with a contract that was issued by local authorities in 2008 to a private bus company to transport children who lived in remote areas to their schools.

The officials are to stand trial because the 148,000-euro agreement was directly assigned to the firm without a tender, thereby breaching rules for public contracts.
