Social security fund employees announce strike action
Employees at all social security funds will walk off the job from noon on Wednesday and will remain on strike through Thursday, their unions announced on Tuesday.
Workers at Greece’s social security funds are protesting plans by the Labor Ministry to amend the law regulating disciplinary action in the public sector and to impose stiffer penalties on employees found in breach of regulations or the code of ethics.
Their protest comes as the coalition government is set to discuss ways to streamline the civil service in order to meet targets set by the country’s creditors. The most likely scenario is that civil service employees who have been found to be in breach of duty by disciplinary councils will be the first to go.
