Shipping magnate’s suspected kidnapper netted in Athens

A 34-year-old citizen of the Former Yugoslav Republic of Macedonia (FYROM), who police have been seeking in connection with the abduction of shipping magnate Pericles Panagopoulos in 2009, faced a prosecutor on Thursday on a string of criminal charges following his arrest in the Athens neighborhood of Peristeri.

The fugitive has been convicted to 15 years for the possession of explosives and membership of the so-called crime syndicate that carried out Panagopoulos’s abduction.

He is also believed to have participated in 21 armed bank robberies in Athens and other cities over the past year that netted more than 250,000 euros.
