Large blaze breaks out in Argolida; ancient theater not under threat

Dozens of firefighters on Friday battled a blaze that broke out in forestland in Argolida in the northern Peloponnese at noon, northwest of the open-air Ancient Theater of Epidaurus.

The fire service said that the blaze was not threatening the archaeological site, nor was it close to inhabited areas or camping sites that are popular with holidaymakers this time of year.

Firefighters from all over the Peloponnese as well as volunteers gathered at the spot to fight the blaze, with the help of four water-dumping aircraft.

Eastern parts of mainland Greece, the Aegean and the Peloponnese were deemed as being at risk of fires on Friday as temperatures were expected to reach nearly 40 degrees Celsius.
