New batch of state workers sought for job transfers
The process of finding more than 8,000 civil servants who will be able to enter the labor mobility scheme Greece has agreed to as part of its bailout commitments has begun after the government secured the first batch of public sector workers, numbering some 4,300, that will be transferred.
Kathimerini understands that a total of 4,289 civil servants are being placed in the scheme this month. They consist of 2,122 school guards, 2,114 teachers and 53 employees at the Administrative Reform Ministry, mostly drivers.
The troika has demanded 4,000 sackings by the end of this year and 15,000 by the end of 2014. Greece has also agreed to have 12,500 civil servants in the mobility scheme by the end of September and another 12,500 by the end of the year.
This means that another 8,211 public sector workers have to be transferred over the next few weeks. Kathimerini understands that this will include 3,000 municipal police, 1,500 administrative staff from the Education Ministry, 1,500 from the healthcare sector, 750 from the Transport Ministry, 600 from social security fund, 500 civilian employees from the Defense and Public Order ministries, 500 from the Culture Ministry and 400 from the Finance Ministry. Other ministries will also contribute smaller numbers of staff.
