Plan for civil servant transfers hit legal obstacle

Government plans to place 25,000 public sector workers in a mobility scheme by the end of the year suffered a potential setback on Friday when a first instance court in Athens ruled that school guards in Aghioi Anargyroi and Aghia Varvara should return to work on full pay while judges consider their appeal against their job transfers.

Just over 2,200 school guards were included in the first wave of some 4,300 civil servants to be transferred last month. The government has committed to finding 12,500 workers for the scheme by the end of September as part of its commitments to the troika.

The court is expected to issue a decision on whether to uphold the appeal by the school guards at the end of October.
