School guards clash with riot police outside ministry

Three people were transferred to an Athens hospital with respiratory problems after a group of school guards clashed with riot police forces in the Public Reform Ministry’s courtyard on Monday.

The school guards were protesting against their participation in a mobility scheme devised by the government which will see some civil servants losing their jobs by the end of the year.

Over 2,200 school guards were included in the first wave of about 4,400 civil servants who were transferred to other positions in the public sector recently as part of the mobility scheme.

Meanwhile, a meeting between Public Reform Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis and representatives of school guard unions was underway Monday morning.
