Greek gov’t requested information on eight Apple devices, report shows
Apple has released a new transparency report disclosing the number and the kind of requests for information regarding its users it received from various governments in the first semester of 2013.
According to the company, the US government forwarded between 1,000 and 2,000 requests for user data on its iTunes and iCloud services since January, but did not specify how many requests it complied with due to restrictions by the US administration regarding how companies report on this kind of information.
The report revealed that the British government stood in second place with 127 requests, followed by Spain which placed 102 requests. The company said that in most cases the requests were made in an effort to solve cases of robberies and other felonies.
Figuring in the same report was a second list regarding information on specific devices. This included information submitted by users in order to register devices as well as specific dates when devices where first connected to the company’s services.
According to the report, Greek authorities submitted two requests regarding eight devices. The Apple report noted that in most cases these requests were aimed at tracking down stolen or lost devices.
