Parliamentary speaker rejects calls for MP salary cuts
Parliamentary speaker Evangelos Meimarakis has dismissed calls from several lawmakers for a reduction in MPs’ salaries saying that their size is enshrined in the Constitution.
“People’s anger is understandable, but the reactions from certain deputies are not. We cannot cut MP salaries,” Meimarakis told Mega TV on Saturday. Meimarakis said deputies were free to donate part of their salaries to charities on their own initiative.
However, in the same interview, Meimarakis raised the issue of scrapping extensive tax breaks for Greek lawmakers.
As stipulated by the Constitution, MPs’ salaries are pegged to those received by judges.
