Cold weather, strong winds hamper travel

Several parts of Greece were covered in snow on Wednesday, while ferries remained docked at several ports around the country.

Winds reaching 9 to 10 Beaufort and low temperatures were expected to persist throughout Wednesday and part of Thursday, according to reports by the Hellenic National Meteorological Services.

Snow was expected in the mountainous areas of Attica on Wednesday with temperatures ranging between 3 to 7 degrees Celsius. Temperatures in the port city of Thessaloniki were estimated between 0 and 8 degrees Celsius on the same day.

Ferries on Wednesday remained docked at the ports of Piraeus, Rafina and Lavrio, leading to the cancellation of scheduled services to islands in the eastern Aegean Sea, the Cyclades, the Dodecanese and Crete.

In the Saronic Gulf boats were operating only to and from the island of Aegina, with no services to Poros, Hydra and Spetses.

The Rio-Antirrio crossing was open on Wednesday.

Travelers are advised to check with port authorities and travel agents before setting off.
