Ex-Transport Minister Liapis to face court over fake license plates
Former Transport Minister Michalis Liapis is due to stand trial on Monday after being caught earlier in the month driving his car with forged license plates and no insurance.
Returning to Athens International Airport on Friday afternoon from a trip to Malaysia, Liapis told the scrum of reporters he was confronted with that he had gone on the trip to “relax after my dramatic experience” and blamed the Greek media for hounding him after his arrest.
The former conservative minister, who claims to have handed in his license plates to the authorities as financial constraints prevented him from paying increased road tax, faces charges of false certification and forgery and a suspended jail sentence of between six months to five years if convicted.
“I made a mistake and I must pay the consequences,” Liapis said after his arrest, adding however that he only took the car out to charge the batteries ahead of his trip to Asia.
Liapis was ousted from New Democracy after his arrest.
