Georgiadis to meet PASOK MPs to discuss alternatives to 25-euro hospital charge

Health Minister Adonis Georgiadis is to meet PASOK MPs to discuss ways of scrapping a 25-euro charge for patients being admitted to public hospitals.

The charge was introduced on January 1 but has already proved unpopular with coalition, as well as opposition, lawmakers even though it had been planned many months earlier.

Georgiadis said he would meet PASOK deputies this week to discuss the measure but added that he believed the government was correct to charge the fee.

The minister said the only way that it could be scrapped is if there is a viable proposal for collecting the revenue it would bring in from other sources. He said that one of the options was to add a charge to all CAT and MRI scans.

Georgiadis said the troika is not opposed to the measure being withdrawn as long as the revenue it is projected to bring in is raised from other charges.
