Doubts about independent evaluation at universities
Greek universities are essentially passing one of the key tertiary education reforms introduced in 2011, which requires them to undergo independent assessment conducted by foreign academics.
Kathimerini understands universities are turning mostly to Greek academics abroad and colleagues from Cyprus to sit on the seven-member independent evaluation panels.
At one institution, Cypriot academics have conducted 90 percent of the assessments.
The measure was designed to open Greek universities up to positive influences from foreign institutions, but the way the evaluations are being carried out means it is doubtful whether it is having the desired effect.
