Sakellaridis voices concern over SYRIZA’s Western Macedonia candidate in local polls

SYRIZA’s candidate for Athens Mayor, Gavriil Sakellaridis, on Thursday voiced his skepticism over the leftist opposition party’s decision to nominate journalist Theodoros Karypidis for the governorship of Western Macedonia in May.

“There are many issues with Karypidis’s candidacy,” the 34-year-old economist told Skai on Thursday.

SYRIZA’s political secretariat was to meet on Thursday amid calls for the party to re-examine the candidacy.

Earlier this week it emerged that Karypidis had posted comments on his Facebook page that were anti-Semitic and appeared supportive of Golden Dawn.

New Democracy and PASOK attacked SYRIZA over its choice of candidate but condemnation also came from the American Jewish Committee (AJC).

Asked about his own candidacy, Sakellaridis said that his aim was to “express everyone who experiences the crisis in the city of Athens and who feels the need to mobilize.”
