DIMAR to back Boutaris in upcoming local elections

Democratic Left (DIMAR) has said it will back incumbent Thessaloniki Mayor Yiannis Boutaris in May’s municipal elections.

Fotis Kouvelis, the leader of the pro-reform socialist party, announced the decision during a meeting with Boutaris in the northern port city on Thursday.

Speaking after the meeting, Kouvelis praised Boutaris for his efficiency and non-partisanship and expressed the wish that the 71-year-old businessman, who was first elected mayor in 2011, will continue his stint at the local government.

Analysts said the move was a bid to capitalize on the fact that DIMAR was the first party to support Boutaris in 2010.
