UK to hear extradition case of couple wanted in Hellenic Postbank scandal in June
A UK court examining a request submitted by Greek authorities for the extradition of businessman Kyriakos Griveas and his spouse, Anastasia Vatsika, on Monday set a new hearing for July 22.
The couple is wanted in Greece in connection to a probe into unsecured loans worth 17 million euros issued by Hellenic Postbank (TT), money which according to a Bank of Greece report ended in their personal bank accounts.
Griveas and Vatsika surrendered to British authorities in January and had initially claimed they would agree to return to Greece and face questioning with regard to the TT loan scandal, over which 25 people are facing charges.
At Monday’s hearing, however, their lawyer demanded a full account of the charges being brought against them by Greek authorities, arguing that some of the offenses may not be crimes under UK law.
