SYRIZA picks candidate for Thessaloniki mayorship

SYRIZA will back Tryantafyllos Mitafidis as Thessaloniki mayoral candidate in local elections in May, the leftist opposition party has announced.

Born in Thessaloniki in 1947, Mitafidis was a candidate with SYRIZA at the 2007 elections. Mitafidis, who is a professor of Greek literature, was sent to prison during the country’s military dictatorship.

In his first statements after the decision Wednesday, Mitafidis accused Thessaloniki Mayor Yannis Boutaris of endorsing the government’s austerity program while calling for a battle against Golden Dawn and all forms of fascism.

“We remain revolutionaries. We will make their life unbearable,” he said.
