Greece appeals for EU aid to support quake-hit island
The Development Ministry has appealed to the European Union’s Solidarity Fund for financial aid to help recovery efforts on the Ionian island of Cephalonia, which suffered serious material damage following two strong earthquakes earlier this year.
The regional governor of the Ionian island group, Spyridon Spyrou, said on Monday that the ministry has made an official appeal for aid, adding that Greek authorities had forwarded to EU officials a set of proposals made by various local business associations regarding the island’s most pressing problems.
Authorities on Cephalonia are hoping to make the most of what is expected to be another record tourist season.
