Release for 2 more guards detained after Kareli’s death

Two more guards from Nigrita Prison who had yet to face a prosecutor in connection to the deadly torture of inmate Ilie Kareli were released on Tuesday after giving their depositions.

One of the two was bailed, the other was granted unconditional release.

A total of 15 guards from the prison in northern Greece have been accused of beating Kareli, leading to his death.

Six of the prison guards have been remanded in custody.

Eight have been released and one more has yet to give his deposition.

Kareli, 42, died a few hours after being transferred to Nigrita from Malandrino jail, where he stabbed prison officer Giorgos Tsironis to death.

The former warden at Nigrita Prison, who faces charges of harboring a criminal, is due to face the prosecutor in Serres after Easter.
