Death at Athens airport blamed on stress

Workers at Athens International Airport on Tuesday blamed tough working conditions for the death of a 52-year-old colleague hit by a bus carrying passengers from the departures terminal to a plane bound for Myconos.

The woman, who was not named, is thought to have stepped out from in between two vehicles after delivering catering supplies, giving the bus driver no time to see her. She suffered serious head injuries in the collision and died soon afterward.

Union representatives blamed the accident on the stress felt by airport staff. “There are firings every day,” said Kleanthis Tratras, the vice president of the Federation of Civil Aviation Unions (OSPA). “The employees are under unbelievable pressure. Everybody is permanently stressed.”
