Poll gives leftists narrow lead over ND, though not in general election scenario
SYRIZA is half a percentage point ahead of New Democracy in terms of popularity ahead of the May 25 European elections, though the conservatives are 1.4 percent more likely to get reelected if general elections were being held now, a poll by GPO conducted on behalf of Mega television channel showed on Tuesday.
The survey of citizen’s voting intentions, carried out between May 8-12, gave the leftist opposition 21.5 percent over New Democracy’s 21 percent for the upcoming elections for European Parliament. New arrival To Potami (The River) polled third at 8.5 percent, followed by neo-fascist Golden Dawn at 7.5 percent and the Greek Communist Party (KKE) at 7 percent. The Olive Tree alliance, which represents junior government coalition partner PASOK, polled at 6 percent, followed by Independent Greeks (3.7 pct) and Democratic Left (3 pct). Nearly 14 percent of respondents (13.8 pct) said they remain undecided about who would get their ballot.
However, as to the question of who respondents would vote for if general elections were called, the lead went to the conservatives with 24.5 percent over SYRIZA’s 23.1 percent. KKE came third with 7.2 percent, while The River came close to Golden Dawn with 7 percent and 6.9 percent respectively. The Olive Tree fared slightly worse at 5.9 percent, and Independent Greeks and Democratic Left did slightly better at 4 and 2.8 percent respectively. The number of undecided voters stood at 12.1 percent.
