Man charged with policeman’s murder remanded after testifying

A 30-year-old man charged with the murder of a 35-year-old police officer in Andravida, in the prefecture of Ilia in the Peloponnese, last Sunday, was remanded in custody on Thursday after testifying before an investigating magistrate in Amaliada.

The suspect is alleged to have stabbed Vassilis Martzaklis several times when the off-duty police officer and father of two intervened to stop him from burgling a friend’s home.

An angry crowd had gathered outside the courtroom in Amaliada where the 30-year-old testified on Thursday, prompting police to use tight security to transfer him away from the area and to Attica’s Korydallos Prison, where he is to remain until his trial.
