Greece has record number of would-be MEPs in EU

Greece will have the largest number of candidates standing in Sunday’s European Parliament elections in relation to the size of its electorate, it was revealed on Friday.

The European Parliament’s media service said that the 1,299 candidates standing in Greece are a record for the 28-member union, with countries that have much larger electorates, such as Germany and Italy, having fewer hopefuls – 1,053 and 807 respectively.

The biggest number of candidates is in France, where a total of 3,753 people will be contesting a place in the European Parliament.

In total, there will be 16,351 candidates aiming to take up the 751 seats in the European Parliament.

Greece has been allocated 21 of these seats.
